This year’s Great Global Greyhound Walk is racing towards us! This annual and worldwide event, celebrates greyhounds and sighthound breeds in general, inviting thousands of dogs and their owners to come together across the globe, raising awareness of these gentle, loving breeds and showing what wonderful family pets they make.
We will be gathering in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire this year, on Sunday, 27th September, 2026, from 10.30am, with the main walk starting at 11.00am. There will also be events happening on the day between 10:30 and 14:30 with our wonderful volunteers providing sales stalls and a Meet & Greet opportunity with our greyhounds looking for homes.
Thanks to the Castle Loch Community Trust, our base for the day is Lochfield Cottage on Castle Loch in Lochmaben, just off the A709, DG11 1LP. The cottage will provide not just a starting point for the walks, but also the venue for indoor events with home-baking, doggy accessories and gift items for sale, inside and outside seating and toilet facilities.
Directions to Lochfield Cottage are: Google Maps Directions and What3Words Link
We are inviting all sighthounds, owners and hound lovers to join us at the event. The walk itself leaves from Lochfield Cottage at 11am and makes a circular route around Castle Loch through the amazing Nature Reserve, including woodlands, past Lochmaben Castle ruins and with stunning scenery to enjoy throughout.
The clockwise walk is a little longer than our other monthly walks at around 3 miles from the Cottage at DG11 1LP and back, but is on well maintained, mostly flat paths and a couple of board walks.
There will be a shorter walk available in an anti-clockwise direction for those wanting a more leisurely day. This will also start at Lochfield Cottage, head along the A709 path, through the Sailing Club and children’s park, to end at the Bowling Green DG11 1NN, where there is also an overflow parking area. Walkers can then return to the cottage or wait to join up with the longer walk participants to return to Lochfield Cottage.
Parking is limited at the A709 carpark nearest the DG11 1LP location, so we are asking those who can, to park either at the Bowling Green Car Park at DG11 1NN or in Lochmaben town, leaving the closest car park for those that need it most. Facilities include toilets at Lochfield Cottage, Crollas Gelateria is less than 0.5 mile further up the road in Lochmaben and there is outdoor and indoor seating at the cottage if you’d like to bring a picnic and stay a while.
It should be a wonderful day out and we love to see all the past charity greyhounds now living their best lives. Perhaps you’ll even meet a new greyhound to welcome to the family. Some photos of walks below during previous walks.
So please come along and join us. We look forward to seeing you all there!
